Gillani™ Warehouse Management System (WMS)
At the core of every supply chain network is a warehouse that is used
primarily for the storage of merchandise. Typical activities performed at
this facility can be generally categorized into:
a) Inbound processes which maintain inventory at a certain level Inventory management which
ensures more accurate data on items and locations in the warehouse and
b) Outbound processes which are performed to fulfill an order.
Given this multitude of varied functions and with each process affecting the
timely fulfillment of an order, it is imperative that a good warehouse
application be used to efficiently manage such a facility. One way to
gauge the efficiency of a warehouse application is to evaluate it in terms
of how it can help the warehouse achieve its business goal of keeping the
inventory costs down while fulfilling customer orders in a timely manner.
Aside from supporting the operations in the warehouse, such a warehouse
management system would ideally improve the following areas:
-
Inventory Accuracy – For example, through the use of RF terminals which can
provide real-time balance-on-hand information as items are put away,
moved or picked.
-
Labor Efficiency- Through the creation of optimized work assignments and decrease
in warehouse errors due to improved data accuracy.
-
Warehouse Throughput – For example, by supporting the cross-dock process that
integrates the inbound and outbound functions to greatly reduce storage costs.
One important factor to consider when evaluating a Warehouse Management System
would be whether it could integrate with other applications currently used
by the business so that information can be efficiently re-used through
every step of the order fulfillment.
